Bran Castle, Transylvania – Picture by @albertocruz13

At 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Brașov, the majestic Bran Castle, a symbol of Transylvania, captures the imagination of visitors from around the world. This enchanting fortress, dating back to 1377, not only boasts a striking appearance but also carries a storied past intricately intertwined with the world of Dracula.

Bran Castle’s association with Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel has made it a must-visit for fans of the vampire legend. While it might not be the actual “Dracula’s Castle,” it exudes the Gothic mystique that Stoker’s Count Dracula embodies. The castle’s tall towers, ancient walls, and impressive architecture evoke a sense of awe and mystery, much like the fictional residence of the vampire.

Beyond its connection to the novel, Bran Castle celebrates Vlad the Impaler, a historical figure respected and beloved in Romania. Known for his strong rule and defense of his homeland, Vlad is seen as a symbol of resilience. Contrary to vampire lore, Vlad’s legacy is one of a fearless ruler who defended his people with determination.

The 14th-century fortress and Royal Court of Targoviste is one of Transylvani’s most beautiful historical landmarks and provides a glimpse into Wallachia’s turbulent history.

This former capital witnessed the rule of Vlad the Impaler, who inherited his father’s throne and introduced the world to his chilling signature torture method, impalement. Inside, you’ll find a rich collection of artifacts, including Vlad’s sword and personal seal. This location is deeply connected to one of history’s most notorious figures, Vlad III.

Nestled high atop a cliff at an altitude of over 800 meters, Poenari Castle stands as a formidable sentinel in Romania. While it may not boast the same fame as its medieval counterparts like Bran Castle or Corvin Castle, Poenari Fortress exudes an undeniable aura of grandeur.

Vlad the Impaler, during the 15th century, recognized the castle’s potential and invested in its consolidation and repair, elevating it to one of his primary fortresses. Poenari’s strategic location made it challenging to conquer, yet its vulnerability to landslides and earthquakes became evident in 1888 when portions of the fortress plummeted into the river below.

While the origin of Dracula’s Castle in Bram Stoker’s novel remains a subject of debate, some suggest that Poenari may have served as the author’s muse, even though no official evidence supports this claim.
