This article will take you through an unforgettable 10-day journey through Italy, taking in the beauty and culture of this country.

Day 1 – Welcome to Rome! – Journey Through Italy

After a restful night of sleep in your centrally located hotel, you and your traveling companion will be picked up by a private driver and local guide for an overview of the Eternal City. You’ll get to drive by some of Rome’s most iconic sites, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, St. Peter’s, Imperial Forum, Vittorio Emanuele II monument, Via Veneto, Teatro di Pompeo (where Julius Caesar was assassinated), Piazza Navona, Sant’Angelo Castle, and Ponte degli Angeli. If you wish, you can also stop at the Trevi Fountain where you can toss a coin into the waters for good luck. 

Your driver and guide will be at your disposal for four hours during the driving tour and three hours during the tour with your guide. Once you finish your tour, your driver will drop you off at your hotel just in time for dinner in one of Rome’s many fantastic restaurants.

Day 2 – The splendors of Rome including the Colosseum, Vatican Museum, and Saint Peter’s Basilica

Start your day in Rome by being met by a driver and local guide who will be with you for the entire day. Your morning will be spent exploring Ancient Rome, beginning with the magnificent Colosseum. From there, you will make your way to the Vatican area for a small-group exploration of St. Peter’s Tomb at 11:20 am.

Afterward, you’ll have a lunch break before continuing to the Vatican Museum at 2:00 pm. This is your opportunity to explore the vast collection of art and artifacts, as well as Saint Peter’s Basilica, with your knowledgeable guide.

Finally, your driver will take you back to your hotel or other location of your choice so that you can enjoy the evening and dinner at leisure.

Day 3 – Positano on the Amalfi Coast, with a stop in Pompeii along the way – Journey Through Italy

Start Day 3 of your 10-day exploration of Central and Southern Italy by checking out of your hotel and meeting your driver for the journey south. After a pleasant drive, you will arrive in Pompeii around 1 pm, just in time to enjoy a light lunch. Afterward, meet a local archaeological guide for a two-hour guided tour of this famous ancient Roman city. Pompeii is one of the major archaeological sites in the world in terms of the size and preservation of its artifacts. The city has remained almost completely intact thanks to the eruption of the nearby volcano Vesuvius more than two thousand years ago. During your tour, you will get the opportunity to walk through the ancient town and visit important sites such as the amphitheater, the thermal baths, the temples of Isis, Jupiter, and Apollo, the Macellum, and the House of the Faun. 

Next, you’ll be met by your driver once again to continue your journey towards the Amalfi Coast. In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Positano, a very famous vertical village known for its picturesque landscapes and charming narrow streets. After checking in to your hotel, the evening is yours to explore Positano at your own pace. Be sure to take some time to wander through the town and find a delicious dinner in one of the local restaurants (don’t forget to ask for suggestions).

Day 4 – The Island of Capri

Start your day off with a private driver who will take you to Sorrento, where you’ll board a hydro-foil fast ferry that will take you to the beautiful Island of Capri. Once you arrive, you’ll meet your local guide who will take you on a three-hour private ride around this Mediterranean jewel in a traditional Sorrentino.

During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the various Grottos and to pass under the Arch of Love, located near the famous Faraglioni, which is the symbol of Capri. You’ll also get to explore the stunning Blue Grotto. There’s no better way to experience this majestic island than taking a guided tour on a traditional boat.

Afterward explore the town of Anacapri, the second-largest center on the island. Take an optional chairlift to the highest peak on the island, Monte Solaro, (589 meters high), with breathtaking vistas of the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi coast. Stroll the typical streets which lead to the Belvedere (beautiful overlook) and the historic Villa San Michele. Enjoy lunch with suggestions and in the afternoon head to the town of Capri by taxi.

Visit the Piazetta with its famous clock tower, walk around the small streets, and learn some of the stories and places that only a local can tell you about. Gain a better understanding of this historic island that has always been a getaway- for Roman emperors long ago and for the rich and famous today. At the end of the day return to Sorrento by public ferry. Your driver will meet you and return you to Positano after also exploring Sorrento.

Day 5 – The Amalfi Coast full-day excursion – Journey Through Italy

Today, you’ll be taken on a full-day excursion of the Amalfi Coast! Starting early in the morning, your private driver will take you to experience the beauty and splendor of this incredible coastline. 

The first stop is Ravello, an amazing gem of the Amalfi Coastline with its famous Villa Ruffolo. You’ll have some time to explore the town and marvel at the majestic views before continuing onwards.

Next up is a visit to the town of Amalfi. Here you can enjoy its impressive Cathedral, a historic landmark that was once one of four important maritime Republics of the peninsula. 

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn about (and taste!) limoncello, the well-loved lemon liqueur from the area.

Finally, return to Positano in the late afternoon for a chance to explore the town at your leisure.

Day 6 – A winery visit with lunch near the Vesuvio volcano en route to Assisi

On Day 6 of your exploration of Central and Southern Italy, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a beautiful winery at the base of Mount Vesuvius. This winery produces a unique blend of wines that could rival the Chianti greats. You’ll enjoy a tour of the winery and sample some light lunch of regional specialties before continuing your journey north to the Umbria region. 

Once you arrive in Trevi, you’ll have the chance to explore one of Italy’s greatest traditions by visiting an olive oil production facility. After this, you’ll take a short drive to your final destination for the day: Assisi. 

This small and charming Medieval hamlet is the birthplace of Saint Francis, and you’ll be able to explore it and find some great places to dine at your leisure.

Day 7 – The splendid hilltop towns of Umbria – Journey Through Italy

Start your day with a morning exploration of Assisi, one of the most important towns in Italy. Here you will visit the imposing Roman Fort and the splendors of the Cathedral of San Rufino and the Basilica of Saint Claire with your local guide.

In the late morning, guests will be driven to visit a Sagrantino Winery producing a superb full-bodied Umbrian red wine. The next stop will be Montefalco, a quaint village offering splendid views over the lush countryside. Lunch shall be enjoyed here, with plenty of regional delights to savor.

The afternoon will take you to some of the small towns in the area such as Bevagna and Spello. These towns have important Roman settlements, Medieval villages, and sites sacred to the life of Saint Francis including the Eremo, San Damiano, and Porziuncola. 

At the end of the day, you will be returned to Assisi for dinner and an evening at leisure.

Day 8 – Assisi and Beyond (Cortona)

Start your day with a visit to the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. This incredible religious complex has a wealth of architectural and artistic treasures that visitors can explore. Be sure to take the time to marvel at Giotto’s famous frescoes, which depict the life of St. Francis of Assisi.

Afterward, depart with your private driver and head towards Cortona, a charming Etruscan town made famous by the book Under the Tuscan Sun. Along the way, stop for lunch at a selected trattoria in this lovely hilltop town.

Continue your journey through the stunning Tuscan countryside before arriving in Florence in the late afternoon. Spend the rest of the evening exploring this Renaissance city and enjoy dinner at one of its many restaurants.

Day 9 – Beautiful Florence! – Journey Through Italy

A full day will be spent in the stunning city of Florence. In the morning, guests will enjoy a tailored tour of Florence in the company of an expert private guide to visit wondrous sites such as the Ferragamo Museum or the newly remodeled Duomo Museum. In the early afternoon, a group visit to Palazzo Vecchio’s secret rooms can be organized, including Bianca Cappella’s private room that is accessed through a secret door in the Map Room.

Afterward, guests will pass a splendid afternoon enjoying a private hands-on cooking experience to prepare delights such as hand-made pasta with a perfectly-paired sauce, traditional white bean and barley soup, or roasted Florentine pork loin plus a scrumptious dessert such as tiramisu or chocolate mousse, all of course, served with great local wine. At the end of the day, dinner will be based on their culinary efforts! End the day in comfort, returning to the hotel and overnight.

Day 10 – Departure

On the final day of this incredible exploration of Central and Southern Italy, guests will check out of their hotel and be transported to the Florence airport or other destinations upon request. After having accumulated memories to last a lifetime, it’s time to bid farewell and start planning the next trip.
